Workshop for Universities Teaching Staff in Lviv

In May 2019, the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre carried out another informational workshop “RECP Course Integration into University Curriculum. Benefits and Opportunities”, this time on May 15th in Lviv, for University teachers. The National Forestry and Wood-Technology University of Ukraine (NFWTU) provided support to the event and hosted it in its spacious conference hall. The workshop gathered in one place teaching staff of the following educational institutions, namely National Forestry and Wood-Technology University of Ukraine, National University “Lvivska Politechnika”, Lviv National Agrarian University, Stepan Gzhytskyi National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnologies (Lviv), Lviv State University of Life Safety. The representatives of Lviv Oblast Administration (Lviv ODA) showed interest towards informational event and attended it too.

Mykola Adamovskyi, the first Deputy Rector for scientific and pedagogical work at National Forestry and Wood-Technology University of Ukraine made a warm opening with a short introduction speech. Another welcome address to the participants made special guests of the workshop Branko Dunjić, Chief Technical Advisor of the UNIDO Project, and Igor Haiduk, Deputy Director of the Department for Education and Science at Lviv ODA.

The main workshop session, basically, span around actual implementing RECPC course into University curricula of the national Universities. In his presentation, Andrii Vorfolomeiev, the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre’s Director, narrated on the fundamentals and methodology used for RECP concept implementation in Ukraine and focused basically on demonstrating benefits and opportunities for Universities that would pick up the idea and finally integrate RECP subject into the curriculum. Igor Shylovych, another RECP Centre representative on a position of technical advisor, tailored his presentation from a bit another angle – he talked basically about methods of technical assessments, though also paid much attention to giving proofs that RECP concept is well-related to standard technical subjects. To emphasize and actually finalize his speech, Igor Shylovych drew the attention to case studies, all of them showing positive trends of RECP implementation into University curriculum.

Apart holding the position of RECP Centre Director, Andrii Vorfolomeiev, PhD, also works as a senior lecturer at the Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management within National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. This fact gives him good chances to share his own university experience in RECP Course implementation into the Institute he has been working for couple of years. Borys Bakai, PhD, heading departments for Forest Production and Forest infrastructure at NFWTU, became another speaker, he represented the hosting University and shared his experience in RECP implementation for Bachelors and Masters studies for qualifications called “Forest and Industrial Engineering“ (“Forestry” and “Applied Mechanics” more deeply) – all that at National Forestry and Wood-Technology University of Ukraine.

The core session ended up with active discussions between the speakers and the workshop attendees. Among willing to comment, we should mention Igor Rebezniuk, Grand PhD in technical sciences, professor, Director of the Institute for Engineering Mechanics, Automation and Computer-Integrated Technologies within NFWTU. He noted, “Solving production problems caused by environmental challenges requires wide RECP integration to all educational programs. This is what Ukraine has to do in view of the commitments to become sustainable and follow up SDGs”.

Igor Rebezniuk emphasized that new generation of engineers should be highly skilled and well trained to address urgent social challenges and contribute to sustainable development. In addition, thanks to cooperation with RECP Centre, NFWTU managed to successfully implement RECP course into the University curriculum.

Liudmiyla Maksymiv, PhD, associate professor of the Environmental Economy Department at NFWTU, stressed on the workshop topicality, on advantages granted due to preventive actions made to avoid the problem, on raising consciousness towards responsible production and consumption, and on disseminating the workshop materials among interested parties, especially lecturers and students.

The seminar ended up with the discussions on further RECP course implementation in Lviv universities.

The workshop was carried out within the framework of UNIDO Project Promoting the Adaptation and Adoption of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) through the Establishment and Operation of a Cleaner Production Centre (CPC) in Ukraine”.
