UKRAINE’S CIRCULAR RECONSTRUCTION

Recovering Ukraine’s infrastructure and revitalising its economy requires a forward-looking approach that prioritises minimising environmental impact and at the same time opens up new opportunities for businesses and society as a whole.

On 17 April 2024, as part of the World Circular Economy Forum, the accelerator session ‘Ukraine’s Circular Reconstruction’ under the EU4Environment Action was organised by UNIDO and the European Commission Directorates General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DGNEAR). The participants of the session negotiated the opportunities and challenges for ensuring circularity in Ukraine’s recovery, with a focus on economic recovery and infrastructure reconstruction.

Nadiia Bihun, UA Deputy Minister Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, in her speech focused on the implementation of circular economy approaches in the national economy plan.

Tetiana Dehodia, Acting Technical Director of the RECP Centre, presented the implementation results of the EU4Environment component “Circular Economy and New Growth Opportunities” in Ukraine, funded by the EU. She highlighted the great potential in Ukraine to implement circular approaches in the national industry and affirmed the support the Ukrainian society demonstrates towards the circular economy concept.

The Ukrainian delegation also showcased the practical application of circular economy strategies in the country and discussed the requirements of sustainable recovery and the integration of CE principles to reduce construction waste and stimulate economic growth and new opportunities.

Despite today’s challenges, the restoration of Ukraine represents a chance for rapid modernization, especially with the backing of the EU in advancing environmental  sustainability.
