Industrial Resource Efficiency in the Eastern Region of Ukraine
On 12 November 2020, the planned online-event “Industrial Resource Efficiency in the Eastern Region of Ukraine” was held to familiarize participants with the practical aspects of the resource efficiency implementation in the Eastern region, to indicate the characteristics of the work in the target region, as well as providing online education for sustainable development and sustainable business processes for SMEs and so forth.
The event was moderated by Ivan Omelchuk, Regional Coordinator of the RECP Centre in the Eastern region of Ukraine.
In his opening speech, Andrii Vorfolomeiev, the Director of the RECP Centre welcomed all participants and noted that this event was one in a series of online events, being organized by the Centre in 2020, namely in the Southern, Western and Eastern regions of Ukraine. The Eastern region is considered more industrialized than the Western region thanks to the city of Kharkiv and its various industrial plants, factories, enterprises etc. “Enterprises have to be resource efficient to remain competitive. They need to make sure that as many resources as possible are turned into a final product. This will provide economic benefits to reduce the burden on the environment,” quoted Andrii Vorfolomeiev.
In his keynote address, the Director of the Centre described the UNIDO project that had been under way in Ukraine since 2013, the RECP concept, the principles and approaches of the circular economy, on which the whole world was very actively embarking, so Ukraine should do the same. The presentation mentions all the information publications that have been developed and published this year on the RECP Centre’s website, and these are: the report of the survey results at industrial enterprises, which demonstrated how caused by COVID-19 quarantine affected their work, materials about the manufacture of sanitizers, etc. Andrii Vorfolomeiev also announced the launch of the online course “Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production”, the entire course of which is placed on the Centre’s website and on the Centre’s own YouTube channel. Separately, Andrii Vorlomeiev focused on the tasks of the project “EU4Environment” and RECP Clubs activities.
Ivan Omelchuk, Coordinator of the RECP Centre in the Eastern region continued the event by presenting practical aspects of the resource efficiency introduction in the reporting region. He explained the RECP assessments in the region’s enterprises in more details, the activities of RECP Clubs and the participation of companies’ representatives in other projects carried out by the RECP Centre. “Thanks to the introduction of resource and energy efficient measures it is possible to achieve economic, ecological and social benefits”, added Ivan Omelchuk.
Then the floor was given to Yuliia Laskava, the energy manager at “CMHBO Engineering, JSC” which specializes in producing compressors, gas pumping equipment, centrifuges etc. The energy management sector of the enterprise regular monitors the consumption of all resources in production processes. The enterprise plans to develop and implement an energy management system to meet the requirements of ISO 50001 standard. “It is important for us to cooperate with the RECP Centre. Thanks to its wide expertise in this matter it helps all enterprises to introduce the idea of resource efficient and cleaner production. The experts of the Centre assist in identifying bottlenecks in production, analyzing the situation, offering effective solutions to problems and navigating the activity of the enterprise in the right direction. Kateryna Prykhod’ko, project manager for the UNDP Project “Online Education for Sustainable Development” has made an extensive story about the Resolution “Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. One of the main messages that had a direct bearing on the topic of the online event was: “The sustainable development goals are based on the efficient use of economic resources, which determine the production, distribution of goods and services. Efficient use of resources makes it possible to maximize the production and minimize possible loss. At the same time, the misuse of resources can lead to the collapse of the enterprise, even entire economies”.
Taras Savchenko from Sumy City presented the activities of his Business Information Support Centre, BISC (EBRD project), as a platform of opportunities for enterprises, which consists of 15 network centers from all over Ukraine. The presenter provided information on the BISC network’s products: forums, management flagship schools, curricula, educational visits, mentoring programs, counselling, pool of consultants, funding programs.
Stanislav Boiko, a representative of the Renewable Energy Laboratory of the Poltava State Agrarian Academy, concluded the speakers’ presentations under event agenda. The launch of the RECP Club in Poltava became a significant event for the Academy. The Club meetings started in November 2019. “I want to pay a special attention to the lively dialogue, level of understanding and competence of the RECP Centre experts when discussing the questions from the Club members concerning real cases at productions”. To sum up his speech, Stanislav Boiko added: “Having mastered the RECP course last year, I have significantly expanded and improved my skills in developing technical solutions aimed to improve resource management that entails economic, environmental and social aspects. I am grateful to the entire team of the RECP Centre for the unique opportunity to join the launch of the RECP Club in Poltava region, as well as the level of training that I received after the completion of the course “Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production”.
Both the moderator of the event and the Director of the RECP Centre expressed their sincere thanks to all participants for the opportunity to meet together and share the results of cooperation, for the inspired reviews and for the perseverance in the RECP methodology implementation in Ukrainian industrial enterprises.
