Steering Committee has commended the National RECP Centre results in 2018
This year the Steering Committee of the UNIDO Project “Promoting the Adaptation and Adoption of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) through the Establishment and Operation of a Cleaner Production Centre (CPC) in Ukraine” was convened on March 6 and hosted by Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
The Project Steering Committee has been for years following the typical agenda covering 2 key issues – highlighting the results of the previous year and approving the working plan for the current year. The SC meeting in 2019 offered a third issue and that was a PPT presentation on eco-industrial parks (EIP) development. The audience got very much enthusiastic about this topic as appeared to be very promising, for Ukraine in particular.
The SC meeting attended: Petra Schwager, Senior Industrial Development Officer, UNIDO; Branko Dunjić, UNIDO Project Chief Technical Advisor; Emina Alić, Deputy Project Coordinator for RECP, UNIDO; Nicolas Guigas, Deputy Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine; Anna Vilde, National Programme Officer, Sustainable Energy Management and Urban Development; Andrii Vorfolomeiev, Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre Director; Sergiy Sydorenko, Vice-Rector of research and educational work (foreign affairs) for Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute; Oleksandr Chernykh, Director of Industrial Policy Department at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine.
In his welcome address, Serhii Sydorenko emphasized that as a RECP Centre’s founder Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has always monitored its activities and keeps on supporting the Center with all the capabilities and scientific and technical potential, thus contributing to the Centre’s dynamic development in the future.
Andrii Vorfolomeiev, the RECP Centre’s Director, successfully delivered 2 presentations, the first focused on the results achieved in 2018, and the second – on the 2019 Work Plan. Due to conducted RECP assessments, the Centre’s experts identified 99 technical options within 2018. The estimated potential upon their implementation might give the reduction of following items in 1 year: raw materials – 84 t; chemicals – 400 kg; water – 4,009 м3; electrical power – 559 MWh, heat – 42,743 MWh. The cumulative reduction of emissions – 8,718 t CO2-eq. Apart from technical issues, Andrii Vorfolomeiev presented a new organizational structure of the RECPC, and intensifying activities in the regions (West, East and South) with the Head office in the Central Ukraine (Kyiv).
While commenting the presentations Petra Schwager reported, “The Centre’s networking is built on cooperation with international and national partners. We in UNIDO are always trying to find some regional funds contributing to regional development. That is why we are analyzing the industrial and regional development policy to see where the Centre can contribute to this development”.
Oleksandr Chernykh emphasized on the importance of the Ministry’s cooperation with the RECP Centre in terms of drafting efficient National Industrial Development Strategy. He added that the Centre’s role in implementing resource and energy efficiency at Ukrainian enterprises can’t be underestimated.
Emina Alić was given the floor as the third speaker to share the information on the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme (GEIPP) embracing Columbia, Peru, Vietnam and Ukraine. She commented about Ukraine’s huge potential for EIP development and according to statistics, 41 parks were registered, but all have various stage of readiness right now.
It should be noted, that the main part of the SC meeting ended up with interesting discussions among its participants, comments and remarks provided. All in all, the Steering Committee approved both the Management report 2018 and the Work Plan 2019 of the National Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre.
