GREEN CHEMISTRY IN A CIRCULAR ECONOMY (TWO TRAININGS)

On 5 and 7 September, two online trainings on “Green Chemistry in the Circular Economy” were held in Ukraine as part of The Global Green Chemistry Innovation and Networking Program (GreenChem).

The target audience of the training was professionals and researchers working on issues related to the chemical sector, green chemistry, industry, circular economy and environmental protection. The training was held on 5/09/2023 for participants with basic knowledge of chemistry. It covered the practical application of certain green chemistry approaches to minimise waste and use renewable resources in the implementation of circular economy principles. It also presented the GreenChem Program, its objectives and tools, and possible green alternatives to certain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are the focus of the Program. For participants with advanced chemical knowledge, the training on 07/09/2023 also covered the possibilities of molecular design to predict and reduce the hazards of chemical compounds. 

Yurii Bondarenko, Deputy Head of the Environmental Safety Department, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, and Andrii Vorfolomeiev, Director of the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre, delivered welcome speeches. Mr. Bondarenko stressed the importance of developing a circular economy in Ukraine and the sound chemicals management in national enterprises. “Such trainings are very relevant today,” added the representative of the Ministry of Environment.

Andrii Vorfolomeiev reported: “Ukraine is moving towards European direction, so it is important for us to follow the current global trends in sustainable development and use the best available technologies and practices. This mainly concerns the implementation of circular economy and green chemistry approaches. Our country has significant potential for the development of green chemistry, namely: the regulatory framework is being updated, the innovation ecosystem is actively developing, Ukrainian companies are interested in and implementing green technologies, and green chemistry disciplines are being introduced in educational institutions. The Global Green Chemistry Innovation and Networking Program is a good opportunity for all stakeholders not only to increase their awareness of the latest approaches and practices in chemicals management, but also to receive assistance and support in implementing these approaches”. The RECP Centre Director also reminded that the GreenChem Program in Ukraine will continue for another 6 years, so there are many more interesting and useful activities ahead.

The trainers were Olena Tabachuk and Oleksandr Khokhotva, chemical management experts from the RECP Centre in Ukraine. The participants were offered exercises to predict the biodegradability of chemical compounds and to calculate the atomic efficiency of different synthesis methods of the same pharmaceutical product.

All participants received certificates for their participation in the training.

The two training sessions were attended by more than 63 professionals (47 women and 16 men).

The training was organised by the Centre for Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production in partnership with the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale University (USA) as part of the UNIDO Global Green Chemistry Innovation and Networking Program (GreenChem) project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
