The study tour in October (1-6) to Switzerland is over. It was organized within UNIDO project ‘Promoting the Adaptation and Adoption of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) through the Establishment and Operation of a Cleaner Production Centre (CPC) in Ukraine’. The purpose of the study tour was visiting some key enterprises and infrastructures in Switzerland with complementary workshops and presentations, so that Ukrainian experts got an insight of the Swiss industry, stand of technology and RECP-related efforts. The Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre has become the first in Ukraine who got accredited by Ugrgasbank JSB. From now on, the RECPC has been empowered to conduct energy audits within ECO-banking strategy.

Ugrgasbank JSB has been guided with a strategy supporting the clients, which have been implementing resource efficient projects and the ones focused on decreasing the negative footprint on the environment.

The workshop for Energy efficient electricity use in Industrial electrical systems and Buildings in Ukraine was held on June 18-19, 2018 at the State Higher Educational Institution “Kyiv Electromechanical College”. This event was organized by the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre.

Mr. Holger Papst and Mr. Christoph Hauser, the representatives of Lenum AG, Switzerland,  electrical engineers with international experience in energy efficiency of production processes were the trainers of the event.

Participants of the workshop were 2^nd-3^rd years students of the college. During the 2-days training they got to know about the environmental impacts of energy sources and consumption, paid attention on the main consumers of energy in industry, electrical systems and buildings, reviewed BAT and BAPs, and took part in solving a number of technical issues. Resource efficient economy scaling up has become a trend for developed countries. The European Commission launched its ‘Roadmap to a Resource-Efficient Europe’ and the ‘Action Plan for the Circular Economy’ in 2015. Thus, average resource productivity in Europe in the period 2000-2016 showed 1,5 times increase – from 1.47 to 2.08 euros/kg.

The workshop “Life cycle analysis (LCA) as the RECP concept component” took place on April 27, 2018, at the Governing Body Hall at Igor Sikorsky KPI. The teachers and post graduate students became the workshop audience. Fredy Dinkel from Switzerland, representing Carbotech AG senior partner, was invited as the key speaker.

The workshop covered various topics and these were: LCA benefits, methods and implementation examples while carrying out and targeting the production processes. Apart from the above, an environmental and economic innovative program aiming to analyze the RECP implementation measures was also presented at the workshop. The program dubbed “PEER v. 1.13”.was developed by KPI students.

It has become customarily, that this year, like in 2017, the Governing Body Hall at Igor Sikorsky KPI warmly hosted the Steering Committee Meeting (SC). However, this year it was set for April 23, 2018 and was as usual devoted to the UNIDO project “Promoting the Adaptation and Adoption of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) through the Establishment and Operation of a Cleaner Production Centre (CPC) in Ukraine” and its outputs achieved and accumulated through the previous year. Not only the results but identification of the further project perspectives and area of activities up to 2020 were the topics of the meeting.

Igor Sikorsky KPI warmly hosted a workshop ‘Chemical Leasing: an intelligent and integrated business-model for sustainable chemicals management’ on April, 17, 2018. Apart from familiarizing the participants with economic, environmental and social advantages resulting from maximum efficient chemicals management, the event targeted on demonstrating sustainable chemicals management benefits in business development.

During the seminar, participants demonstrated examples of successful practices in the implementation of Chemical Leasing around the world that serve and encourage enterprises to implement this business model, identify the factors, requirements and opportunities for the successful implementation of the Chemical Leasing concept in Ukraine in order to promote the competitiveness of domestic enterprises in the world market.

The seminar pinned on sharing the BAPs in ChL implementation worldwide. These practices serve as the drivers to facilitate national companies to pick up this particular business model. The workshop appeared fruitful and helped identify requirements, motives and importance of successful ChL implementation in Ukraine aiming to support national companies become more competitive and recognized in the international market.

“Chemical Leasing: an intelligent and integrated business-model for sustainable chemicals management“ – that was the seminar of today, 5^th April, 2018, taking place in one of the most appropriate lecture halls belonging to Chemistry Engineering Department, Igor Sikorsky KPI. University teachers, post-graduate students and others willing to get to know about ChL and its basic ideas and tasks made up the audience.  

The Executive Director of the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre started the workshop with an opening speech and dwelt a bit on UNIDO project in Ukraine, its fundamental goals where promoting ChL model implementation in the national industry is one of the key ones.

On February 20, 2018, the architectural Department at Kiev National University of Civil Engineering and Architecture hosted a master class delivered by Dr. Stephen Wittkopf, an architect, professor at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Switzerland (HSLU).

The master class was initiated and organized by the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre within the framework of UNIDO Project.

The first master class session presented a PV review, namely, PV modules types, technologies; technical parameters like temperature mode or spectral sensitivity; PV research. The participants got to know about EU and Switzerland main goals in PV development, PV cost analysis and payback period methodologies, full life cycle costs.

The second session dubbed ‘Innovations’ provided information on included information on various PV panels integrations into architecture, typical PV module layers to construct integrated glass, PV axes and encapsulation etc. The speaker shared his knowledge about Swiss approaches to install colored PV panels.

The third session deeply studied specific PV projects, one of them – erecting a building with colored panels ‘Switzerland’ fixed on the facade. This façade actually looks like a mosaic of Swiss cantons flags.

The closing session turned into an open discussion between all the participants and the speaker. ‘The meeting with Ukrainian students was very inspiring and has really charged me with energy to go on with my research’, – Dr. Wittkopf shared his true emotions after closing remarks.
